Your Restaurant Layout Making it Work for You

The fact of the matter is that the restaurant layout you choose will help in several respects.   Not only will it act as a functional space in which you can complete the tasks needed to serve the people you want to serve, but it will also allow you to create an atmosphere for your guests and patrons.  Here are some things you will want to include in your restaurant layout plans:

  • Restrooms – Though not the most glamorous place in your restaurant, too often guides for eating out will note that the bathroom is the place by which cleanliness and style can be measured.  It's in your best interest to make these bathrooms large, accommodating and flawless.

  • Kitchen – Cooking high quality meals means that you need to have the space to do it.  Your kitchen should be easy to move around in, with ample space for multiple cooking stations as required by your menu.  Try to have spaces for each cook and prep worker as well as for food storage and other places for stock.  By making sure that you have plenty of room in the kitchen, you can focus on the food prep.

  • Cashier area – To create a steady pace and flow to your restaurant, the cashier station needs to be easily accessible by your wait staff or by the patrons themselves.  It should be easy to maneuver in as well as provide enough space for a longer line of waiting people.

  • Bar – The bar can be a great way to keep patrons happy and content until a table opens up in a sit down restaurant.  This can also be the main focal point of a sports bar or another more casual locale.  Try to create a bar where at least 20 people can be seated in various positions in order to keep people coming into your restaurant and buying drinks.

  • Dining area – How you present the dining area will make the most impact on your customers.  You need to provide enough room for the customers to move around easily as well as for the staff to move around without disturbing your guests.  It is also a good idea to think about how tables will be able to be moved to accommodate larger parties.

  • Staff space – While often overlooked, your staff will need a space in the back where they can hang their coats and store their belongings.  This is also a great place to hang schedules and have a time clock.

  • Office – When you're storing a lot of money on site, you will need to create a secure office space.  This should have a thick door and enough room for several people to sit inside.

  • Employee restrooms – To help the restaurant patrons be undisturbed, you will want to install employee bathrooms in addition to the guest facilities.

Creating a restaurant layout that is functional as well as beautiful is the goal of your planning process.  Look to other restaurants for ideas.
