Basic Steps To Open A Restaurant
Basic Steps to Open a Restaurant
Whether you pick up a book or surf the internet, chances are good that that you will find a restaurant business guide to help you get started. And that's a good thing. The more information you know, the better off you are when you finally begin your venture. While you can't plan for everything, it never hurts to learn as much as you can. Here are five steps to get you started:
Step #1: Get a Clue
If you've never run a restaurant like the one you want to open, you need to consider yourself a beginner. Even if you've run other businesses, running a restaurant is unlike anything else. To begin your learning process, you'll want to go to similar restaurants in your area to see what they are doing and what you might do differently. You can also talk to other restaurant owners you know, assuming they will share their experiences with you. Another good idea is to sign up with the local Chamber of Commerce to start talking with other local businesses about local concerns. Step #2: Create a Plan Too often, new restaurant owners are focused more on the 'concept' of their restaurant rather than how they are going to bring this concept to life. You need to focus on creating a well-designed plan of how you are going to bring your restaurant to life, how much money you plan to make, and how much money you need to get started. You can find a number of examples of a good business plan online or from business publications. Step #3: Come Up with a Concept Though steps 2 and 3 are usually reversed, once you have an idea of what you want to do with your restaurant, it's time to figure out HOW you're going to do it. This means you need to begin to scour the market to see what is missing from your local area. If you notice that there aren't a lot of Italian restaurants, you might want to hop into that niche. Take some time to look at the restaurant listings in our area and then determine where you might be able to fit in. And if you have any special skills or recipes, those might also be good starting points for your restaurant. Step #4: Find the Money and the Location Since you probably don't have unlimited resources, you will need to talk with your local bank or financial institution about getting a small business loan. You may be able to do this with the equity in your home or simply as a personal loan, depending on your financial situation. Of course, some of the amount depends on the location you choose, so be sure to think small in the beginning, but choose a location where your ideal customer is going to go. Step #5: Hire some people and get started While this seems like the quick guide to the restaurant business, all you really need to do is come up with a plan, get money, order some foods, hire some people, and get started. Though it might seem more appropriate to wait a bit before you get started, someone else might jump into the area with your idea too. So, if you have the courage, getting started in your restaurant dream is the step you need to take.
